Silky's Carnival Black Knight Pageant.

Ashton-under-lyne Black Knight Pageant Sunday 29th June 2003.

Above is Jason and friend as the TWEENIES. Jay is one of Ashton's up and coming DJ's.
THE HISTORY OF THE BLACK KNIGHT PAGEANT
The Black Knight Pageant was originally introduced back in 1795 and was called "riding the Black Lad".
It was to commemorate Sir Ralph de Assheton (The Black Knight), who was a friend to King Richard the Third. An effergy of the Black Knight was made from straw and paraded around the town calling at the local public houses and eventually set on fire.
Many years later 1909 the Black Knight Pageant was a carnival as we know today.
From 1909 - 1954 only twenty two pageant's were staged In 1954 the pageant came to an end, as i recall it was introduced again in the 1970's for 1 year. In the early 1990's the Ashton carnival was formed. This lasted for 5 years, and i have fond memories of that annual event, as i was a member of the carnival committee and parade marshall for this event.
For the last 3 years the Black Knight Pageant is back creating
family fun, and keeping up the local traditions of
Ashton-under-lyne.

The Black Knight Ball.
After the Black Knight carnival parade came the Black Knight Ball. A afternoon packed with entertainment for everyone. Music and entertainment from Bombay Baja "Britains best Indian brass band. Show stopping songs from BEYOND THE BARACADES singing songs from the west end musicals. Plus top tribute acts

Steve Sinclair as Tom Jones!

Louise Jaymes as Kylie Minogue!

Motown classics from The Atlanta soul band!

Jeni Jayne as Britney Spears!

The show came to an end with DJ Boothrider Booth playing the Ibiza anthems. The Black Knight Pageant is back, many thanks to the Ashton-under-lyne District Assembly and my very good friend Peter Hawley for a fantastic carnival day.

Keeping up the tradition
